Homebrew is the missing package manager for macOS and Linux, designed to simplify the installation of software that Apple or Linux distributions do not provide by default. Originally created by Max Howell in 2009, Homebrew has become the most popular package manager for macOS, maintained entirely by unpaid volunteers as part of the Open Source Collective. The system installs packages to dedicated directories (/opt/homebrew for Apple Silicon, /usr/local for Intel Macs) and creates symlinks for easy access. Homebrew uses Ruby-based "formulae" scripts to build software from source and provides pre-compiled "bottles" for faster installation. Key features include Homebrew Cask for GUI applications, extensive GitHub integration with user contributions, support for custom package creation, and Git-based update system. The platform supports macOS versions currently receiving Apple security updates (macOS 13 Ventura, 14 Sonoma, and 15 Sequoia as of 2025) and offers Linux compatibility through the merged Linuxbrew project. Homebrew has earned widespread adoption in the developer community for its ease of use, extensibility, and seamless command-line integration.
