Why I Built Major League GitHub (MLG)
Open-source software has always been a driving force behind innovation. It’s where the best engineers collaborate, solve complex problems, and push technology forward. But finding great developers — especially those who actively contribute to open-source projects — can be challenging. I wanted to change that.
Major League GitHub (MLG) is an open-source leaderboard for GitHub contributors, inspired by the structure of Major League Soccer (MLS). It provides an interactive way to explore top open-source contributors by location, programming language, and engagement metrics.

The Idea Behind MLG
Hiring engineers who contribute to open-source projects means getting professionals who are passionate, experienced, and technically excellent. However, the process of identifying top contributors can be time-consuming. While GitHub itself provides some insights, I wanted a way to bridge the gap between hiring and open-source contributions.
MLG does exactly that by:
- Mapping developers to cities and regions, making it easier to find top contributors nearby.
- Ranking contributors by activity metrics, such as commits, stars, and engagement.
- Allowing users to filter by programming language, helping companies and teams discover talent specific to their stack.
- Bringing a fun, competitive element to open-source, inspired by the way professional sports track and highlight players.
Why This Matters
MLG isn’t just about ranking GitHub contributors. It’s about building a bridge between open-source contributors and organizations looking to hire top talent. By making open-source contributions more visible and accessible, MLG helps developers get the recognition they deserve while helping companies connect with the best engineers in their field.
